The word oblate means to offer up, devote, consecrate or dedicate. The Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate are men of faith who offer their lives in the service of the Lord. The group was originally started in France in 1816 by St. Eugene De Mazenod and since then has grown to a group of more than 4,500 men who serve the poor and those in need around the world. The primary mission of the brothers and priests is to share the Gospel of Jesus with the world. The Oblates first came to America in 1841 and spread throughout the country on horseback setting up missions and performing acts of charity.
Today, the Oblates are living and working in 71 countries, helping where they are needed the most. Many Oblates are located in areas of extreme poverty and violence, advocating peace and helping those in need. While missionary work in the far corners of the world is not for everybody, each person can do his or her part by praying or donating time and money.
