Hellmuth, Obata, & Kassabaum, Inc., the designers of the Church, gave careful attention to creating a worship space that would serve the particular needs of those who visit the Shrine. It was completed in 1990 and designed to meet the need for indoor worship space to accommodate the many visitors to the Shrine.
Pilgrims Gate
In the courtyard is the trellised "Pilgrims Gate," giving human dimension to the total structure as a seemingly always open door, inviting the pilgrim to come in. The 16' cross at the end of the Pilgrims Gate reminds us that it is through the Cross of Christ that we find our salvation. It also serves as a reminder of the Cross each person must carry on life's pilgrimage.
Icon of Mary
In the gathering space is a stunning, contemporary icon of Our Lady of the Snows, presenting her Divine Son for our contemplation and our imitation. Iconographer, Basil Lefchick, followed the centuries' old rule of fasting and praying while executing the stylized images of Mary and the Baby Jesus.
The Living Waters Font
Continually circulating blessed water reminds us that we are God's people passing through the waters of Baptism.
The Altar Area
Liturgical Consultant, Fr. John Bascemi, designed the oak altar, pulpit, and tabernacle. A 15' x 20' double "Aurora Borealis" window adds brilliance to the sanctuary and to the sacredness of the altar. A Holtkamp Pipe Organ lends its melodious voice to the voices of the faithful.
